(Sourced from Science Quest's careers page)**Overview and Background**Founded in 1988, Science Quest is a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) based program operated on the campus of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Through Science Quest's summer camps and in-class workshops, we engage the 5000+ youth ages 4-13 that we reach annually in hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations that build scientific literacy, spark creativity, and promote collaboration.
The Curriculum Coordinator role is designed to advance Science Quest's mission of "inspiring future innovators" through meticulous program planning, safety management, and instructor training, ensuring that all programming meets the highest standards of safety and educational value.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a Science Quest Curriculum Coordinator, employees will report to the Director team of Science Quest, and work closely with their fellow camp instructors, the Alma Mater Society (AMS), and other organizational partners to provide a structured and safe camp experience.
The position is for a work term lasting from **May 2026 to August 2026**. During this time, you would be expected to commit to working **35 or more hours per week**. The pay for this position is **$18.60 per hour**. Key responsibilities include:
1. Curriculum Development: Curriculum Coordinators will design STEM-focused activities tailored to the learning needs of children across various age groups, incorporating hands-on experiences that make STEM concepts accessible and enjoyable. Each Coordinator will be responsible for developing the curriculum for one Science Quest summer camp program, focusing on areas such as Robotics, Science & Engineering, Technology & Computing, early STEM education, or STEM education for girls.
2. Risk Assessment and Compliance: In accordance with Queen's University policies and federal and provincial laws, Science Quest is required to adhere to risk and safety standards established by Queen's Risk and Safety Services. Coordinators will conduct detailed risk assessments for all developed camp activities, ensuring compliance with these standards. They will work closely with the Head Director, the Camp Compliance Oversight Group (CCOG), and the AMS to verify that all safety protocols are rigorously met.
3. Instructor Support: Curriculum Coordinators will help camp instructors with developing programming, emphasizing material safety, engagement strategies, and effective activity facilitation. They will also provide guidance on Science Quest's camp routines, classroom management practices, and program logistics to ensure consistency and quality in program delivery.
4. Workshop Presentations and Community Outreach: In addition to their camp responsibilities (July - August), Curriculum Coordinators will deliver outreach workshops at local schools and community centers (from May - June 2025), expanding Science Quest's reach and fostering community interest in STEM. Coordinators will develop engaging presentations and demonstrations for these workshops, creating their own activity plans to ensure each session is interactive and impactful.
Candidates for the Curriculum Coordinator role should have experience in STEM or education and demonstrate strong skills in project planning, curriculum development, and safety management. The position requires excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills, along with a demonstrated ability to engage young learners. A background in youth work is an asset but not required. Candidates should have a strong interest in STEM and an aptitude for sharing their enthusiasm in accessible ways for children.
